Essex Mayor Ron McDermott questioned Kady's motivation in making the donation. McDermott said he has given money to Haiti earthquake relief, as have the majority of citizens. However, he said, there are many needy people here at home. "If you look at reality, there are people suffering in our own municipalities right now," said McDermott. "I would sooner give it here, $100 or $1,000, rather than send it to Haiti. I'm not saying they're getting too much, I don't know if they're going to have enough money to rebuild that piece of the world. We could give it locally rather than over there.
