Study: Hospital interns spend 40 percent of time on computer
BALTIMORE, June 28 () -- Hospital interns spend 12 percent of their time talking and meeting with patients, and 40 percent of their time on a computer, U.S. researchers say.A team of researchers from Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore conducted a study to determine how interns spent their time in the hospital.Interns were observed by researchers for a total of 873 hours of inpatient ward rotations at two internal medicine residency programs at large academic medical centers in Baltimore in January 2012.The study, published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine, found interns spent 12 percent of their time in direct patient care -- such as talking with and examining patients; 64 percent in indirect patient care -- usually on the computer accessing electronic medical record systems of patients; 15 percent in educational activities and 9 percent in miscellaneous activities such as eating, christian louboutin pigalle, sleeping and walking.Computer use occupied 40 percent of interns' time, the study found."Interns today spend a minority of their time directly caring for patients," the researchers wrote in the study. "Compared with interns in time motion studies prior to 2003, interns in our study spent less time in direct patient care and sleeping, christian louboutin sale, and more time talking with other providers and documenting."
