Both men expressed their belief that the Star Tribune is really a community asset that should have strong community ownership. However, they provided it clear within an interview that their motive is business-driven which their offers are not really a charitable contribution.
"The Star Tribune has to pay its way. It's important to have a very good editorial staff. The challenge is when is the next step advertising within this environment?" Taylor said. "Vance and I have talked about it. We're not sitting here with the answers but the goal would be to result in the paper a profitable enterprise."

A prospectus outlining the proposed transaction has been sent to the newspaper's more than 40 shareholders this morning.
The Star Tribune's largest shareholders include private equity finance groups Wayzata Investment Partners and Angelo Gordon Co., as well as investment bank Credit Suisse, CIT Bank as well as an affiliate of GE Capital.
