By Luke Williams in PotsdamOn the second day of the 7th UEFA Youth Conference, participants turned their attention to the future of UEFA's youth competitions as well as discussing other issues.Previous yearsFor the past one-and-a-half seasons a pittsburgh steelers jerseys new structure has been in place in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship and the Under-19 version. In previous years one country advanced from each first-round group of the U19 championship to form an intermediary round of seven two-legged play-offs to determine the tournament finalists. Meanwhile, in the U17 event the 15 qualifying round group winners would join the hosts in the final tournament.New structureIn both competitions now, two countries and the best third-placed side from all 12 first-round groups advance from each first qualifying round group and join the three top seeds in a second qualifying round containing seven groups of four countries. A prevailing opinion seems to be that the new structure has been a great success, in that it offers many smaller associations the chance to play more competitive youth internationals over the course of the season - providing their young players with invaluable experience.Particular concernThoughts were also canvassed on FIFA's new rule regarding dual nationality and the ongoing issue of securing the release of players from clubs to participate in youth internationals. The latter issue, in particular, seems to be one of almost universal concern. As UEFA Amateur and Youth Football Committee chairman Jim Boyce said at yesterday's press conference: "Many countries have turned up [to youth tournaments] with weakened teams. Clubs should be encouraging players to represent their country at youth levels."Feedback examinedThe feedback from group discussions was later presented for the benefit of the whole conference by Boyce, who promised that all suggestions would be examined in full by the committee and any recommendations to come out of that discussion would be passed on to the UEFA Executive Committee.Round-table talkUEFA's Keith Cooper then hosted a round-table discussion involving three coaches from UEFA member associations - Germany U19 coach Ulli Stielike, Estonia assistant coach Jelle Goes and Belgium U19 coach Marc Van Geersom. The coaches shared their experiences of working in three contrasting countries and their youth coaching philosophies.Practical demonstrationsThe coaches also observed practical demonstrations from local youth players and then watched a highly entertaining Jubilee Starball match. Boyce also addressed this point at yesterday's press conference when he said: "I would like to see [the media in different] countries give youth football the credit and publicity it deserves."Day concludesThe second day of the conference concluded with the draws for the first qualifying rounds of the 2004/05 U17 and U19 championships. For the full details of the U19 draw click hereFor the full details of the U17 draw click hereFor details on the first day of the conference click here Related ItemsProvisional U19 schedule unveiled
