These players have some mighty big shoes to fill
WR: Calvin Johnson, Georgia Tech. Sophomore Greg Smith is a little battle-tested, but redshirt freshman Demaryius Thomas figures to get the gig. He's a 6-3,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 220-pounder who has promise as a down-the-seam wideout.
WR: Dwayne Jarrett, Southern California. There's no shortage of options, headed by junior Patrick Turner and sophomore Vidal Hazelton. But redshirt freshman David Ausberry, a big,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], physical option, is one to watch.
TE: Greg Olsen, Miami (Fla.). The school has become a tight end factory. Olsen may have been the best ever. The staff is checking out converted fullback Chris Zellner, Dedrick Epps and DajLeon Farr, a former big-time recruit.
OL: Joe Thomas, Wisconsin. The race is wide open to replace a guy who left as the one of the school's best linemen ever. Sophomore Jake Bscherer will get the first crack. He passes the eyeball test (6-7, 285) but needs to refine his technique at tackle.
OL: Justin Blalock,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Texas. This is a big void -- literally and figuratively -- at guard. Junior Cedric Dockery looks like the guy. The brother of former Longhorn, Derrick, Cedric started the first six games last year before suffering a knee injury. He's tough and strong.
OL: Tony Ugoh, Arkansas. Junior Jose Valdez backed up Ugoh at tackle. At 6-6, 310 pounds, he's bigger than Ugoh, but he lacks the athletic ability that made Ugoh a special player. Still, Valdez's ability to run block fits well with the Hogs' plans.
OL: Levi Brown,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Penn State. This could be a work-in-progress until August. Sophomore Dennis Landolt backed up Brown last year at tackle, so he's the front-runner. Junior Gerald Cadogan could win the spot. At 6-5, 311 pounds, he looks the part. But he disappointed last season.
OL: Josh Beekman, Boston College. Seniors Tom Anevski and Ty Hall will battle for the guard spot. Don't be shocked if Hall wins the job. He's a tenacious blocker with refined technique.
QB: Troy Smith, Ohio State. The Heisman winner did it all for the Buckeyes last year. Junior Todd Boeckman looks like the favorite. He's a coach's kid who knows the offense and has nimble feet. But strong-armed sophomore Rob Schoenhoft will push him.
RB: Adrian Peterson, Oklahoma. Believe it or not,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], few in the OU camp are losing sleep over Peterson's departure, given the way senior Allen Patrick and sophomore Chris Brown looked last year. Plus, dynamic redshirt freshman DeMarco Murray debuts.
RB: Antonio Pittman,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Ohio State. The continued emergence of sophomore Chris Wells will buffet this loss. He showed flashes of his great potential last year and run inside and outside. Nifty junior Maurice Wells also is back as a change-of-pace.
E: Gaines Adams, Clemson. The job belongs to rising star Ricky Sapp, an athletic, explosive force as a freshman who just needs to add weight before becoming a full-fledged terror.
T: Alan Branch, Michigan. With Branch off early to the NFL, the Wolverines will turn to senior Will Johnson, who has battled injury throughout his career. He backed up Branch last year. Johnson is strong but lacks the same quickness as Branch.
T: Amobi Okoye, Louisville. Adrian Grady, come on down! The 6-2, 292-pound junior has started six games, so he knows the drill even though a broken leg ruined most of last season. Even better: He has flashed some big-play potential.
E: Jamaal Anderson, Arkansas. Malcolm Sheppard looks like the guy. The 6-2, 255-pound sophomore impressed enough as a true freshman last year to work his way to second-team status. He showed potential for applying pressure, which bodes well for the Hogs.
LB: Paul Posluszny, Penn State. Word is Dan Connor will slide inside and take over for "The Poz." It's the same move Posluszny made prior to last season. Sophomore Jerome Harper figures to fill Connor's slot on the outside.
LB: Patrick Willis, Ole Miss. Time to worry. The slot of the Butkus Award winner likely won't be filled until the fall, when JC stud Tony Fein arrives.
LB: Rufus Alexander, Oklahoma. It looks like it could be junior Ryan Reynolds, a looming talent who missed last year with a knee injury. He reminds many of former OU star Teddy Lehman. If Reynolds isn't up to speed,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], senior Demarrio Pleasant or junior Curtis Lofton could step in.
DB: Aaron Ross, Texas. Senior Brandon Foster has been a backup for three seasons, so he's ready to replace the Thorpe Award winner. While Foster lacks size (5-9, 180),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he's a speedy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], athletic corner who should hold his own for a secondary with myriad questions.
DB: Daymeion Hughes, California. No doubt,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this guy will get picked on often with rising star Syd Thompson at the other corner spot. Jeff Tedford will have redshirt freshmen Charles Amadi, Brandon Jones and Darian Hagan compete. Stay tuned -- and expect a drop off.
DB: Leon Hall, Michigan. Look for junior Brandon Harrison to assume command at Hall's corner spot. He lacks size (5- but is solidly built and a hard hitter. He needs that muscled to deal with taller receivers.
DB: LaRon Landry, Louisiana State. Coach Les Miles has lots of options. But junior Curtis Taylor appears to be the future. He's a 6-3, 204-pound force at free safety who likes to hit and knows the defense.
