Steve Novak becomes latest feel good story for Knicks,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Jeremy Lin's rise from the last man on the bench to star point guard has been nothing short of remarkable,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. All the Point Guard from Harvard was a little of bit playing time to show Mike D'Antoni that he can indeed play and help this team out significantly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Since his breakout game of 25 points on Feb 4th against the New Jersey Nets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Knicks have gone from being the NBA's biggest bust of the season to one of the more likeable teams in the sport. It is not just because of Lin that the team is starting to become one of the feel good stories in all of sports. The outstanding play of Lin has allowed another player to rise from no man's land on the bench to become a significant contributor.
There is probably no one else who has benefitted more from Linsanity than Steve Novak. Novak came off the bench last night to light up MSG with five three pointers for 17 points to help fuel New York's 120-103 comeback win over the Cavaliers. Novak has become a huge fan favortie with his amazing range from beyond the arc,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and has now added a little something extar after every big three pointer he hits.
After hitting back to back 3-pointers late in the third quarter to give New York it's first lead of the game,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Novak did his best Aaron Rodgers impersonation by doing his "title belt" celebration,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which has become famously known as the "Discount Double-Check". Novak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who played his college ball at Marquette,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], located in Wisconsin,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], may start to get the same love from the Garden the way Rodgers gets at Lambeau Field.
"I'm a huge Packers fan. I was a huge Brett Favre fan and now obviously Aaron Rodgers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Novak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who played college ball at Marquette,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is located in Milwaukee. "Our team security had been trying to get me to do the celebration for a long time. I didn't even think about it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it felt good."
He was starting to get same love as Rodgers and even Lin last night during the fourth quarter last night. After the Cavaliers went on a small run,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chants of "We want Novak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], We want Novak" were echoed through the Garden as they let the former Golden Eagle know how much they appreciate his Reggie Miller-like shooting.
Novak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who is 28 years old,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], had to deal with Lin went through but for a longer amount of time. He was drafted by the Houston Rockets in 2006 ,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and spent the next six seasons bouncing around four other NBA teams as a reserve and the D-League. After being released by several teams,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Novak seems to have found a home with the New York Knicks.
Novak's game has gone up another level since Lin became the starting point guard. In the 13 games that Lin has started,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Novak has shot an incredible 48 percent from three point range. He is averaging 12 points,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which is eight points higher than his career average. There is no question that without Novak's outside touch,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Knicks would not have won 10 of their last 13.
His best performance may have come on Feb 19th during the Knicks 104-97 win over the Dallas Mavericks. Novak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who had zero points through three quarters,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], brought the Garden to it's food scoring 14 straight points to turn a two point deficit into an eight point lead. It was the most impressive win of the season for a Knicks team regrouping after an awful 8-15 start to the season.
