Parents look for savings on back to school items
When Danbury resident shopped for school supplies recently, she realized she made over $5.
That's right, not only did she not spend any money,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but she ended up earning $5.89 on her purchases.
After buying about half a dozen items in Staples including pencils, scotch tape,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], ballpoint pens, and folders--many of which were on sale for $1 or less--she spent a little over $30. She then used a $10 competitive coupon from , and when she got home, she mailed in three rebate redemption forms she received from Staples.
On another local shopping excursion, her purchases included 15-cent spiral notebooks, 20-cent glue sticks, and a $10 backpack.
"We only shop the sales,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Melendez, 36, a stay-at-home mother to Aaron, 8,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Olivia,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 6,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Evan, 4. "My kids know that if something is not on sale, we don't get it."
Camille says she and her husband Jeff, 35,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who works as an elementary school principal,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], make it a point to set an example to their children to spend money wisely.
"Delay gratification is our motto. If the children say they want something,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we tell them `You know what Grammy always says -- It's good to want things.' This is a saying Jeff's mom (Theresa) used to say to him when he was young. It means `You don't always get what you want,'" she says.
She adds that she puts the money she saves toward family vacations, going to the movies,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and giving to her church.
, also of Danbury,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], shares Melendez' philosophy for saving money. "We don't buy any school clothes until late September or early October, when the weather starts to change. After Labor Day,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], prices tend to be much cheaper,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Silverman, 45,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], mother to Abby, 10, and Kate, 6.
When it's time to go shopping, Silverman buys everything at once.
When she comes home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she goes through all her purchases and decides what she wants to keep, and then returns the rest.
"I'll probably return about half the clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and spend a total of $300 for both girls together. This always includes some dressy and play clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as black stretchy pants, jeans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tennis shoes, dark colored boots and school shoes. I'm also able to get a great winter coat from Sears for about $30 to $50, which comes with a convertible lighter coat inside it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," adds Silverman, a stay at home mother,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whose husband Ken, 50, works as a marketing manager.
