Moncton is the first city in Canada to recycle sneakers for a special program run by athletic-wear maker Nike,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The shoes are ground up for use on athletic surfaces by Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"When people come here and buy new sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they throw (the old) ones out and we usually just put them in the garbage,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Joey Stokes who sells athletic shoes in Dartmouth.
The granulated rubber from the shoe outsole makes soccer,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], football and baseball fields and weight room flooring. Foam bits from the shoe midsoles are used in synthetic basketball courts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], tennis courts and playground surfacing tiles. While granulated fabric from the shoes' upper section becomes the padding under hardwood basketball floors.
Many boys' and girls' clubs in Canada have these type of floors installed by Nike,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The program will keep shoes out of landfills,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with the province paying for collection and for trucking the sneakers to Oregon.
And there's another first: Moncton will be the first community in North America that does curbside collection for sneakers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
"Actually it's not that bad. It wouldn't smell like most people would think,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," says Christa Methot of Westmorland Albert Solid Waste Corporation. "They've had air run through them,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so it's not that stinky."
