Men basketball ready to start new era,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
The University of Utah men's basketball team will get the season started with an exhibition game against Adams State on Saturday. The Utes are headed into a new era not only as they enter a new conference but also with their new coach Larry Krystkowiak. There is also a lot of change in the roster as only four players return from last year's squad. The players that return include,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seniors David Foster and Josh Watkins along with juniors Chris Hines and Jason Washburn. All four players made at least 10 starts last year.
As for the many newcomers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], eight are eligible to play this season while three must sit out one year. Junior College transfers Dijon Farr (Jr.),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Cedric Martin (Jr.),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Javon Dawson (So.) and Corbin Green (So.) will all be expected to contribute this year. Kyle Perkins,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who will be a redshirt junior,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], also returns after serving a 2 year LDS mission. Those who have to wait until the 2012-2013 season include,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Glen Dean,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Aaron Dotson and Alexander Rickets,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], all of whom are juniors.
The Utes bring in five freshmen to start the Pac-12 era, George Watkins (Wing), Alex Mortenson (Guard),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Anthony Odunsi (Guard),[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Kareem Storey (Guard) and Blake Wilkinson (Forward). Odunsi looks to be the standout freshman. He looked very impressive in the Red and White scrimmage scoring 12 points.
Nobody quite knows what to expect from this Utes team. It is clear that Coach Krystkowiak is trying to rebuild,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he still expects success from the players he has. Krystkowiak is a disciplinarian and should turn around the nature of the basketball program.
It will take time before they are competitive in the Pac-12,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but there is just something about Krystkowiak's brand of basketball: hard work on and off the court,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], being accountable and no complaining. Although many questioned the hire of Coach Krystkowiak,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and many probably still do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], one can't help but feel as though he will bring success.
Even if you are not optimistic about this season,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], go to some games and support the new coach and the team as they head into a new era. Fan support can really help a team, especially at home. My challenge to Ute fans,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], turn the Huntsman Center into a place that opposing teams will fear once again. If fans show their support,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Coach Krystkowiak will give them results.
