Mason still has much to offer
It was a bit of a surprise to hear that Wests Tigers were pulling the pin on their plans to sign Willie Mason. From all reports they were just about to put pen to paper and it seems as though the decision has been made at a much higher level than the coaching staff and players. Mason would have been a great acquisition for the Tigers who currently have some young forwards who aren't quite up to first grade yet. He has returned from a stint in French rugby, has been training hard by himself and is fitter than ever. He would have given the Tigers some much-needed starch up front.
Playing prop may well be the simplest role on a rugby league field,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is easily the most difficult. A good prop forward is rarely at his peak before his mid to late twenties. Experience is such a vital part of a prop's tool kit - experience and toughness - both of which increase with time playing at the highest level. Mason is at a stage in his career where he knows he has one last dig at proving himself at the highest level and contributing to a team's success.
Any player who has ever met and played with Mason is generally a fan. He is a big bloke,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], full of energy and is fun to have around. I think he could still be of great value to any NRL team. One of the best coaches in the business, Craig Bellamy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], has said so publicly. Who knows, he could even end up running around for Melbourne Storm where several old forwards have gone to resurrect their careers.
Greg Inglis left the Storm to continue his career and it may have received the perfect boost from South Sydney coach Michael Maguire. Playing Inglis at fullback has revitalised a player who was already one of the most freakishly gifted in the game. Watching him tear Penrith apart the other day was just incredible, some of the things he did were just ridiculous. At one point he took a high spiral bomb on the run without breaking stride. Those things are tough enough to take when you are camped under them. He absolutely fed on the extra time and space he had at fullback. It helped that he probably saw more ball in the one game than he would normally see in three games at centre. He has to stay in the No1 jersey for Souths and with him in that kind of form their prospects for the season look a lot brighter.
Another team that looked much better after a positional tweak was Cronulla,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. I think Jeff Robson's combination with Todd Carney in the halves was one of the keys to their upset win over Manly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. The steady game of Robson takes a lot of pressure off Carney and allows him to be more selective about his contribution in attack,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Sharks looked good against the premiers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with none better than inspirational captain Paul Gallen. Gallen is more like a machine than a man; he really is playing beyond the bounds of what we'd expect from a normal human being. There may be other players who can match his numbers in each match, but I don't think there are any who can match the quality of his contributions. Every run he makes bends the opposition defence, every hit-up and every tackle he makes hurts an opponent and he does it from the first minute of the game to the last. Gallen at 30 is a perfect example of my point about the value of experience to a forward. He may have been a good forward in his early twenties, but now he is close to being the very best.
If you watch every game of rugby league played for the rest of your life I doubt you will ever again see a tackle exactly like the one Tony Williams made on Cronulla's Isaac De Gois. Williams is a man whose only rugby league weakness has been a lack of aggression, so deliberately trying to maim someone is completely out of his character. If anything, Williams just doesn't realise his own strength at times. It was a very ugly tackle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with a real potential to cause great harm, but thankfully De Gois landed quite safely in the end. It definitely deserved punishment, but I think five weeks maximum would have been about right. The key for me is that it was a split-second error of timing, with no intent involved. Williams will miss playing a Test for Australia and as I have said before, Tests,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], State of Origins or finals mean so much more to a player than a regular NRL match. Those fixtures need to represent more than just one game in such a suspension.
Williams is only young and will be back for Manly before we know it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Imagine how good he will be with a few more years' experience under his belt.
Would you want Willie Mason at your club?
Is Greg Inglis better at fullback or at centre?
Was the seven-game ban on Tony Williams too harsh,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]?
Willie Mason is a complete and utter boofhead. The position he finds himself in where no football club want a bar of him is all of his own doing. He is just like Dunny Bill Williams believing he is the greatest ever and is bigger than any sport. Whilst on his day he was a great footballer unfortunately his extra curicular activities (grog, brothels)make him persona no grata. Why would any club want a player who is not only not loyal to any club or the NRL but thinks he is a law unto himself ? A complete no brainer. I think he played a lot of his junior football as fullback. Correct me if I"m wrong.
If it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck it a damn DUCK. Of course it deserved 7 matches,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. No one thinks that it was any way intentional but unfortunately the only people griping are Manly,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. But please refs be CONSISTANT,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
Joey you are like a box of chocolates. You never know what your gonna get. You say some very smart things like about Inglis and then you say the MOST STUPID thing I have ever herd,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. Who in their right mind would take on Mason. He is TROUBLE with double captials. He wont bring on the young blokes he will be a moron and drag them kicking and screaming into trouble like raping some one or taking them out and getting them rotten. When you get experianced players you want them to set standards not get arrested or drag your club down in the media. If I was coaching a park team I would not let tiny willy anywhere near it. Now Joey take one foot at a time out of your mouth.相关的主题文章:
