Indians sign Nick Swisher to four,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Per Paul Hoynes of the Cleveland Plain Dealer.
Swisher, who sported a .473 slugging percentage and .837 OPS (on-base percentage plus slugging) last season, may fit in well with the Cleveland ballclub.
Swisher, who's appeared in at least 148 games each season since 2006, will join a club featuring just two players with 500 games of experience. Swisher has played 1209 games in a nine-year career.
He will join a club which desperately needed the proverbial pop in the lineup. In losing Choo,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Indians were without one of their strongest offensive threats, one which never found a comfortable spot in the lineup in previous years.
Manny Acta had been in a conundrum last year particularly.
Choo batted lead-off in 99 games last year, with 33 doubles and 12 home runs at the top of the lineup. But with nobody on base with Choo churning up the basepaths,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Acta looked to move his right-fielder to the middle of the lineup.
But the patient-hitting Choo, forced into a spot where the lineup revolved around him,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], couldn't adjust to the role. His batting average slumped and his on-base percentage dropped 60 points.
So Choo would move back into the lead-off spot to hit doubles with the bases empty.
Swisher,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], again whose numbers dwarf every Indian batter since 2010, found himself on a Yankee lineup full of all-stars and millionaires. With a plurality of games in the six-hole, Swisher split time in the second-,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], third-, fourth-,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fifth- and seventh-spot in the lineup at various points in 2012.
But Swisher's 24 home-runs and 60 extra-base hits in 2012 will plug into a lineup whose home run leader in 2011 was Carlos Santana with just 18,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
The Indians might need him off-the-field,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], too. Cleveland finished in 29th of 30 teams in attendance last season.
With a horde of new signings, Swisher, Mark Reynolds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Mike Aviles, Trevor Bauer, and others,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Indians are searching for a new look, a new face. After all, Travis Hafner is 35, Grady Sizemore is out for the beginning of 2013 and fans will never again combine for a chorus of "Chooooo" when their quiet, prized right-fielder walked to the plate.
Swisher has a history of appealing to his fanbase,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
In 2010,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the Yankee was contending with several other AL players for the league's "All-Star Final Vote" contest. Swisher appeared in a promotional commercial, worked for endorsements from New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg and several headline actresses and utilized social media to garner votes for the last All-Star Game spot.
With the hashtag #SENDSWISH,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], he narrowly beat Kevin Youkilis and was voted to the All-Star game.
Indians fans may want to start using the hashtag too--if nothing else,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Swisher may enjoy a surge of followers from those near the corner of Carnegie and Ontario.
Indians also signed LHP Scott Kazmir to a minor-league deal. Kazmir last pitched in the majors with one appearance in 2011. Kazmir's last full season was in 2010 with the Los Angeles Angels, finishing with a 5.94 ERA in 28 starts and 150 innings pitched.
