Hormone pill slows prostate cancer's growth

The drug won federal approval last year for males with advanced prostate cancer whose disease had worsened despite treatment with standard hormones and chemotherapy. There have been more cases of hypertension, fluid retention and heart problems among men on Zytiga. Like other hormone-blockers, it can cause hot flashes and sexual problems. And Zytiga is expensive - $5,500 per month in the United States.
The research was sponsored by the drug's maker, Johnson Johnson's Janssen division, plus some study leaders have financial ties to the company. The company intends to seek approval later this season to sell the drug for males like those in the brand new study.
Michael Wells,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 65, a retired construction worker from Oakville in California's Napa Valley, was diagnosed nearly 12 years ago with cancer of the prostate which had spread to his bones.
