Homeless men plan to run in Redeeming Hope race Knoxville News Sentinel,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]
Three days a week,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], with varying consistency,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], homeless men - and it's mostly been men - lace up their donated sneakers at Redeemer Church in Fort Sanders, and they run.
Since it started in the spring, the group has grown to a handful of runners on some days. On others, no one shows up at all,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Chelsea Knotts, a 21-year-old senior cross country runner at the University of Tennessee. She organized the running group through Redeeming Hope Ministries.
"I thought it'd be an easy thing to start. It's not," said Knotts,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who has been volunteering with Redeeming Hope since last year. "There are things you take for granted. We had to find them shoes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a place to shower,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], outfit them with clothes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], find them breakfast in the morning because they don't always eat the night before."
But,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], at least two runners said they plan run this morning in a 5K race to raise money for Redeeming Hope, an outreach group serving the homeless,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], said Knotts. at Circle Park on the UT campus. As of Thursday, 140 runners signed up for the race, and Knotts said she hopes for more to register on race day.
Robert Wilson, 53, who stays at the Knoxville Area Rescue Mission, said he's excited for his first race since running with the group.
"I said, 'It's something I want to do' and I did it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," he said. "I've always been an athlete,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and I always liked to get out and get around. If I'm not working, I'm out walking or riding a bicycle. I'm just the type who gets out and goes."
Recently,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though, it has been harder to attend all the group runs since finding work doing odd jobs, Wilson said. He's been trying to run on his own when he can.
Despite the runners' inconsistent training,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], Knotts and organizers at Redeeming Hope Ministries said they plan to keep the group going long after the race.
"For a lot of these friends we work with,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], setting and reaching goals has not been part of their lives," said Eddie Young, executive director of Redeeming Hope. "People think the number one thing homeless people need is a home. And they do need a home, absolutely. But they need other things, too, just like the rest of us do."相关的主题文章:
