After some areas of northern NJ saw upwards of 4-8 inches of snow this morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the second part of this storm is moving towards the area as we speak. The moisture is currently back in central/western Pennsylvania in the form of severe thunderstorms over a warmer airmass. Out ahead of it in the colder air that is stuck over New Jersey,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], we are seeing a showery mix of sleet/snow/rain. Some of these showers are convective and producing small hail and cloud to ground lightning across northern NJ currently. The threat of lightning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], thunder and small hail mixed with the sleet (Yes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is a difference between sleet/hail despite both taking on the form of an ice pellet) will continue over the next several hours.
As this moisture continues to move in,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it will likely fall as a sleet/rain mix ending as snow across central NJ up to the southern New York City area. Here I could see a coating to MAYBE 2" additional accumulation on the northern fringes before ending pre-dawn Thursday. Elsewhere and just to the north of this,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], including the same areas that got dumped on this morning,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a sleet/snow mix ending as snow could produce an additional 1-3 inches.
A very cold airmass with temperature upwards of 15 degrees below average for late March will settle into the area right through the weekend. There are additional threats for some snow this weekend as well,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], though they currently look like light threats that will stay generally south of the area. Updates on this later in the week.
