Families welcome Vic adoption apology
Victorians affected by past forced adoption practices have welcomed an acknowledgement by the state government of their loss and grief.
Victorian Premier Ted Baillieu will offer a formal apology on Thursday to women who had their newborn babies taken away from them in forced adoptions, which were widespread across Australia from the 1950s to the 1970s.
Speaking on the steps of the Victorian parliament beside hundreds of children's shoes lined up on the parliament House steps ahead of the apology,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], advocate Coleen Clare said the significance of the day could not be underestimated for mums, dads,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], sons,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], daughters and their families.
'Decades of trauma,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], of loss, of grief, of feeling that you live in a shadow world, today there will be some acknowledgement of that by the premier and we appreciate that,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' she told reporters.
But Ms Clare,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], chief executive of support group Vanish, said people needed to understand that forced adoption is a life-long journey and when your baby is taken from you, that grief never leaves.
Ms Clare called on the government to not only apologise but back up its word and change the law so mothers and fathers could access free information about their biological children,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
She said those affected by past forced adoption practices needed the right to counselling,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
'We need the professionals to be trained to understand adoption,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], to understand that you don't move on, this is something you live with for life and we need support groups,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych],' she said.
