The failure of Essex town council to agree on an amount to donate to Haiti relief that resulted in no donation at all has prompted a Harrow pharmacist to pony up a $1,000 pledge on the town's behalf.
"It's just utterly absurd that a group of supposedly intelligent men can get together in a room and all want to be charitable and end up giving nothing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Lonie Kady,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], co-owner of Hometown Family Pharmacy on Queen Street.
Kady said he learned of council's lack of action at Monday night's meeting on Tuesday from customers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Town council couldn't agree on an amount to send even though the Association of Municipalities was only suggesting $100. One councillor argued for a donation of $2,500,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and in the end no donation was agreed upon.
Kady went to the AMO website and saw they were recommending donations to one of 12 charitable organizations,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
One of them was the Mennonite Central Committee,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and since Kady and his pharmacy had already been working with the local Mennonite church to put together relief kits for Haiti, he chose them.
Kady sent an email to the AMO to tell them he was making the donation on behalf of the municipality.
He said it was because he didn't want the town to appear on the website as non-contributors.
"It doesn't matter that all six wanted to give something, what we should judge them on is the end effect, which is giving nothing,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," said Kady.
"You know, they just couldn't get it done. For us in the municipality it's just another example of 31/2 years of just not being able to work together to achieve a beneficial result."
Essex Mayor Ron McDermott questioned Kady's motivation in making the donation.
"That's all fine and good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but if he decided to donate money, that he needed to donate money, he would have donated it long before now, not because the town hasn't given any money," said McDermott. "Do I have to give this much money and put it in the paper and look for a pat on the back? That's not what it's about,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], if you're donating money."
McDermott conceded the optics of the town being unable to agree on a donation weren't good,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but he said he has heard from taxpayers who wonder how many times they are expected to give.
"I've had people tell me 'I've given, why should you be giving on my behalf?'" said McDermott.
"Are we paying three or four times? Do I feel bad,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? I feel bad for the people over there. I'm praying more for the people there than the people over here,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]."
McDermott said he has given money to Haiti earthquake relief, as have the majority of citizens. However, he said, there are many needy people here at home.
"If you look at reality, there are people suffering in our own municipalities right now," said McDermott.
"I would sooner give it here, $100 or $1,000, rather than send it to Haiti. I'm not saying they're getting too much, I don't know if they're going to have enough money to rebuild that piece of the world. We could give it locally rather than over there.
