Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart was no respecter from the maxim that one shouldn speak ill of the dead: After the death of Sen. Edward M. These dorms controversial then and remain so now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however they have survived through the years because they offer an important educational and social experience. They are not entirely segregated; a maximum of 50% of each dorm can house individuals fitting the "theme" ethnicity. To live in one of these, you have to agree to take on a project fitting the ethnic theme -- so Ujamaa residents of any race have to write an essay about some part of the black experience on campus, for example. There are also educational and cultural programs inside the dorm.
Towards the extent that these dorms were controversial on campus during my time, it was due to the fact they stimulated a tremendous quantity of discussion about race -- and with that discussion came tension. Inside a school peopled mostly by privileged white students, it was a little shocking to listen to about the resentment and isolation sometimes felt by black students, or even the anger simmering under the surface in a Latino community that in the mid-80s was still being arguing over whether to call themselves "Chicanos" and whether fighting for their rights was really as critical a goal as integrating with American society. But amid all of the tension,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], something miraculous happened: learning. White students learned to put themselves within the shoes of the multicolored peers, and minority students, I think, found that communication fosters understanding.
I understand why the thought of themed dorms outrages some people; it appears as though an attempt by minority students to isolate themselves, to prevent the intermingling that's said to be area of the college experience. And also to some white people,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], it seems unfair: Why do black people reach have their own dorm, whenever a similar white-themed college dorm would reduce liberal fury? The easy answer to both concerns that white people aren minorities. We don have to go from our way to be around people like us -- they everywhere. Minority students on an overwhelmingly white campus are under constant pressure to "represent" their race; it must be an excellent relief to go home to a dorm where they aren the only real black part of the room.
Maybe if Tulane had had themed dorms, Breitbart would have learned a few of these lessons. However i doubt it. Learning, or attempting to understand from another person perspective, were never his strong suits.
