Cheap Can Also Be Chic
The Washington chapter from the international nonprofit organization has launched a campaign to recast itself like a supply of vintage and high-end fashion so that they can expand its subscriber base to young, professional women. It's hired Hall to blog about stylish merchandise found in its stores and uploaded a relevant video of its annual fashion show to YouTube. Goodwill was founded to teach and rehearse those who are disadvantaged or have disabilities. The nonprofit operates nine stores in the region and receives more than 400,000 donations each year. Hurley said the typical shopper is a 35- to 49-year-old woman having a household salary of under $70,000.

However it chose to get in touch with more affluent shoppers too after noticing the popularity of high-end vintage boutiques -- many of which sell the same items available at Goodwill stores. Hurley said the local Goodwill chapter is the first in the united states to test the concept and start marketing itself through social media outlets for example MySpace and YouTube. Hall was named retail marketing manager in June and began blogging shortly afterward under the pseudonym DC Goodwill Fashionista.
"At first I had been surprised that there were comments at all. You don't understand what to anticipate. This is brand-new territory for all of us," Hall said. "Is anybody going to take Goodwill seriously with a fashion blog?"
Inside a recent post, Hall wrote about fall looks for men culled from Goodwill's stores. She picked a gray wool zip-up sweater from J. Crew with flat-front trousers for just one outfit, and a shiny striped button-down shirt in another -- a bit unorthodox, but fashion is about risks.
"The shirt is a little bit shinier than I'd usually recommend,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but it is from DKNY and it continues to have the tags onto it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I thought I'd throw it in," she wrote. The website receives 600 to 800 visitors every week, many of them local. Hall blogs three days per week and features Goodwill finds on Tuesdays.
