Amelia Earhart
Amelia was created into a well to do family in 1897 in Kansas. While she was in college, she visited her family who had gone to live in California. It had been there that she met Neta Snook Southern, pioneer aviator, who later taught Amelia how to fly. Additionally they became friends.
Her solo Atlantic flight made her a high profile - a Ny tickertape parade when she returned to America. She later started to arrange for an around-the-world flight,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as well as in 1937, on her behalf second attempt, actually began by flying to Puerto Rico. She had completed about 75% of her goal when her plane was lost,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], never to be found.
Amelia Earhart, in the photo at right, is standing in front from the Lockheed Electra by which she disappeared in July 1937. Born in Atchison, Kansas in 1897, Amelia Earhart didn't begin flying until after her move to California in 1920. After taking lessons from aviation pioneer Neta Snook in a Curtiss Jenny, Earhart attempted to break flying records, breaking the women altitude records in 1922. Earhart continually promoted women in aviation as well as in 1928 was invited to become the first women to fly across the Atlantic. Accompanying pilots Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon as a passenger about the Fokker Friendship, Earhart became a global celebrity following the completion of the flight. In May 1932 Earhart became the first woman to fly solo across in the Atlantic. In 1935 she completed the very first solo flight from Hawaii to California. Meanwhile Earhart continued to promote aviation and helped found the group, the Ninety-Nines,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an organization focused on female aviators. On June 1, 1937, Earhart and navigator, Fred Noonan, left Miami, Florida with an all over the world flight. Earhart, Noonan and their Lockheed Electra disappeared after a stop in Lae, New Guinea on June 29, 1937. Earhart had only 7,000 miles of her trip remaining when she disappeared. While a great deal of mystery surrounds the disappearance of Amelia Earhart, her contributions to aviation and womens issues have inspired people over 80 years.
Due to family problems, Amelia sold her first airplane,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a Kinner Airstar, moved back East, and took employment as a social worker. Four years later,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she returned to aviation, bought an Avro Avian airplane and became the first woman to make a solo-return transcontinental flight. There after, she continued to create and break her own speed and distance records, in competitive events, as well as personal stunts promoted by her husband George Palmer Putnam.
Earhart's name became a household word in 1932 when she became the first woman--and second person--to fly solo over the Atlantic, on the fifth anniversary of Charles Lindbergh's feat,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], flying a Lockheed Vega from Harbor Grace, Newfoundland to Londonderry, Ireland. That year, she received the Distinguished Flying Cross from the Congress, the Cross of Knight of the Legion of Honor in the French Government, and also the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society from President Hoover.
In January 1935 Earhart had become the first person to fly solo across the Pacific Ocean from Honolulu to Oakland, California. In July 1936 she took delivery of the Lockheed 10E "Electra," financed by Purdue University, and started planning her round-the-world flight.
Earhart's flight would not be the first one to circle the world, but it would be the longest--29,000 miles, following an equatorial route. On March 17,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 1937 she flew the first leg, from Oakland, California to Honolulu, Hawaii. As the flight resumed three days later, a tire blew on takeoff and Earhart ground-looped the plane. Severely damaged, the aircraft was shipped to California for repairs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and the flight was cancelled. The 2nd attempt would can start Miami, this time to fly from West to East; Fred Noonan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], an old Pan Am pilot, would be Earhart's navigator and sole companion flying for the whole trip. They departed Miami on June 1, and after numerous stops in South America, Africa, the Subcontinent and Southeast Asia, they arrived at Lae, New Guinea on June 29. About 22,000 miles from the journey have been completed. The rest of the 7,000 miles would all be over the Pacific Ocean.
On July 2, 1937 at 0000 GMT, Earhart and Noonan took off from Lae. Their intended destination was Howland Island, a tiny piece of land a few miles long, 20 feet high, and 2,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 556 miles away.
