MY introduction to aboriginal leadership happened when I was about 13. Our teacher wanted us to know how the reserve worked from the inside out,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I guess. I didn't know what to expect. At the time the chief of Hollow Water was Rod Bushie. It was the first time I'd ever met a chief. He actually seemed a little bit nervous when he began to speak until he really got talking. But you know that saying that people may not remember what you said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they'll remember how you made them feel?Hanging out and listening to this chief speak for a while had an effect; it started to open my completely naive eyes to the reality that aboriginal people had certain rights. You could say it got the wheels turning. Did I mention that school trip was most likely part of our native studies course?Politicians are all the same,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I know. And if you think about it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], this visit was just like visiting the mayor's office,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or the premier,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or if you're really lucky the prime minister's office. Maybe that's partly why kids easily make a connection to the job of chief as a possible future accomplishment. They want to run for council,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], or even chief and change the world.
