An appreciation that's always in fashion
MARK O'Keeffe and the wife Paula Callan-O'Keeffe groan at the reference to Posh and Becks. They're, I was told before we met,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], quite the Irish equivalent - a young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], trendy, good-looking couple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], consciously stylish and unashamed of it. They are just a little mortified by the comparisons, however, though willing to laugh every time the similarities arise. The day we meet, Paula and Mark have matching colds,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which she cut back from the recent work trip to Nigeria. A well-coordinated couple,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there is a sense that they just match, that it's not contrived or a terrible effort to place quite a front on their union.
They explain, plainly, how as soon as they were given together they knew it had been for keeps and just accepted it.
Mark, manager of Peter Mark Hair and Beauty on St Stephen's Green in Dublin, and Paula, senior artist for Mac Cosmetics in Ireland, first met in a fashion show 5 years ago. In their mid-20s and both,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], when it comes to romance, otherwise occupied, they noticed one another,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], however the timing was wrong.
He found her "gorgeous",[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], while she thought him "very cute" and, when each of their relationships ended annually later, a mutual friend, Peter Mark stylist Michael Doyle,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], started to matchmake.
"It was all very schoolyard stuff," Paula laughs. "Michael said,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], 'I know somebody who likes you' so when he explained who it was, I was stunned. He asked if I'd venture out for dinner with Mark, if I'd go for a drink,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and it was all a bit funny."
Just before Doyle's questions, however, Mark had made up his mind about Paula. Their paths had crossed professionally several times since their first encounter and that he had told several people - David Beckham-style - this was the girl he would marry. Some impressive wooing preceded their first date, though - that was again aided by Doyle.
"Michael was all into me sending her flowers and presents," Mark recalls, admitting he sent several bouquets to Paula in Brown Thomas,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], where she then worked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], before they so much as went for any drink after which, after that initial date, he sent a Prada watch. "And an email," Paula interjects, "A note that said, 'Thanks for being a great friend.' I had been like 'friend'? I thought it was a very expensive method of dropping a hint."
That wasn't the message whatsoever, as became apparent on their third particular date, when discussion of marriage began. Within 3 months, they had become engaged and bought their house in Swords - and once friends and family met them together, noone worried that they are in too much of a hurry.
"We just clicked,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]," Mark says, as each agrees this relationship was nothing like the long-term relationships they had experienced previously.
"Before I met Mark, I never really supported marriage," says Paula. "My parents had separate when I was 11 and I'd always said there is no way I had been going to get married. And it was greatly my decision the previous relationship didn't go that way.
"But when I look back now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], I think which was an extremely childish relationship and realise how it only agreed to be so different when I met Mark . . . I realised such a romantic relationship was."
The wedding was a big affair, an elegant statement Mark claims they're still paying for. A lot more than 100 close friends and family joined them in Brook Lodge, Co Wicklow, on July 4, 2001, for several days of partying. Their honeymoon was booked for the following weekend to make sure they got the most fun from the occasion. There have been more friends than family, they explain, as well as their parents were blessedly unfussed about inviting distant relations out of a feeling of obligation.
"It was people who knew us and were near to us,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], which made it very special," Paula says,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], a modern girl with a strong a feeling of what she likes,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and just how she wants it.
Sense of humour has become a bond between Mark and Paula,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but crucial too is an appreciation from the other like a professional and perfectionist. They met through work, and over the years their professional worlds have continued to collide at fashion shows,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], major style events,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], showcases where they demonstrate - to others and each other - that they're each towards the top of their game. They mix with colleagues and friends from childhood as quickly because they do with the fashion and celebrity set, whom they style and frequently consider friends. During our meeting they talk admiringly about each other's resolve for their work,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], whilst teasing how their passionate personalities affect their house life.
A self-confessed "big kid", Mark good-humouredly allows his wife tease him about his hobbies, about his tendency to jump enthusiastically into something after which weary, as they pokes fun at her fondness for shoes and make-up. He despairs at the spare bedroom jam-packed with boxes of Paula's make-up, snorts when she says she uses everything constantly and questions whether she really must keep all those "reference magazines".
In return,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she rolls her eyes in the very reference to his shed. "What's inside again?" she asks, before listing off "the weight-lifting stuff, the barbecue paraphernalia, the fly-fishing gear."
Mark laughs happily at reference to his latest passion,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], explaining that in the last year he's taken to camping and fly-fishing weekends having a handful of mates. I would recommend that it's a quiet pastime, a rest from the bustle of salon life and it's Paula's turn to snort. "Quiet," she laughs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "I've seen the photos."
Time together,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they insist, matters and at reasonably limited,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], as both tend towards workaholism,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they're also conscious that a little distance, some independence, is no harm.
In her job - in which she handles media, masterclasses,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], seminars and shows - Paula is needed to travel a great deal, something they've considered their relationship's advantage.
As many as seven times annually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she'll be away from home for approximately a fortnight and never per month passes that they isn't away a minumum of one overnight.
"I used to think it is very hard," Mark admits,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "But now I've learned to evolve. I still miss her and should not wait for her to obtain home,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], so I guess that keeps the spark in the relationship and also the time apart gives me time for you to see my mates, also is good."
Quite consciously, Paula and Mark - both 30 - are making the most of those years, when it's only the two of them. Babies are part of the plan,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but not for a few years. They happily discuss the professionals and cons of parenthood,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], her reluctance to give up her career and concern that she'd resent Mark going out into the world while she stayed in your own home, however, you get the impression they'll take anything life throws at them and adapt to it with style.
"For now," Paula says, "The dog is our baby." Paula says, before Mark chips in, it's not only any dog, but an award-winning Staffordshire Bull Terrier. A trendy dog, obviously,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], they admit with a sense of humour Posh and Becks may not quite achieve.
